I have always been drawn to new creative opportunities. When I was ten, I created a fantasy world that won a competition commemorating JRR Tolkien's birthday. Shortly thereafter, I decided I wanted to become a filmmaker, and after studying Honours English in my undergrad, I was accepted to Canada's most prestigious directing program.
I worked in film, television, and did client work, my output ranging from primetime shows on major networks, two acceptances to the Toronto International Film Festival, and E3 trailers for acclaimed AAA game franchises.
In 2017, I discovered VR and AI almost simultaneously, and my mind was blown. Here was a new way to tell stories -- a new way to inhabit and shape stories in ways never before possible. I formed an experimental gaming startup, was lucky enough to recruit some of the foremost AI NPC experts in the world, and secured significant financing to explore what happens when players can step into a game world with its characters.
In the midst of production, GPT-3 was released, and it was immediately apparent that it could change our game, and probably the world too. But the waiting list for access numbered in the tens of thousands. Researching an online tip, we wrote a cold email to Greg Brockman explaining our project. It was a Friday. He got back to us Sunday, and by Monday we were using a new kind of AI than any of us had experienced before.
Since then, it has been a crazy and exciting time. I continue to experiment and build for myself, but my relatively early experience working with language models has opened up many fascinating opportunities to apply what I do to real-world use cases.
Today I split my time between consulting with teams building AI solutions and pursuing personal projects that push creative boundaries -- from winning hackathons with identity exploration tools to attempting a Pixar-quality short made entirely with AI.
